Vintage Sullivant

This Sullivant illustration dates back to 1898. It is one of his earlier pieces, even though he was already in his mid 40s. Sullivant was somewhat of a late bloomer when it comes to finding a personal style (but what a style it was!) Cartoony, but very much anatomically correct.

I found this wonderful image online. It represents Sullivant's art in a polished and refined stage.
Can't take my eyes off his animals, they are the best!

  1. There was a comic book artist named Dick Ryan who drew in a style that (to me) is close to Mr. Sullivant's. Little is know of the guy and he seems to have disappeared by the early 40's. If yo have a moment to look, here's a web site that has a lot of his artwork:

  3. It's wonderful to hear that such an amazing artist was a "late bloomer" in finding their style. I've been frustrated trying to figure that out for myself.

It's hard to wrap my head around how to make something so caricatured but anatomically accurate!? How does he do it!!
